Why would I see a psychologist?
Doubts About Consulting a Psychologist
For me, why would I need a psychologist, and what could possibly be why I need to see one first? I don’t need a total stranger who does not know the ins and outs of my life to be part of the most sacred details that comprise my life to date. How can I trust their guidance and relate to what they advise me if I haven’t known them for as long as I have known my parents, aunts and uncles, and my childhood/lifelong friends? After all, their guidance has been what has given me assurances that I am on the right path time after time in my day-to-day life. I have tried therapy before and had a really bad experience. Why would trying this experience again be any different than the previous time? In our family, we just don’t seek help from outside the home; we prefer to help on our own and not reveal our problems to outsiders unfamiliar with what goes on in our family unit.
Confidentiality and Ethics in Psychology
Psychologists provide a valuable resource in the field of mental health services. Effective psychologists listen to their patients, form a therapeutic alliance with them, and act on behalf of the best interests of the patient by establishing trust and proper boundaries and looking at problems with a balanced/neutral perspective after having gotten to know the scope and sequence of what the patient has gone through in their life to date. Psychologists are not part of the patient’s family unit, thereby eliminating family allegiances or biases over close affiliation with one aspect over the other of the family unit. Psychologists are also not friends to their patients and can objectively communicate observations and considerations for them to benefit them, something that a friend might feel disinclined to do so as not to risk alienating them or causing a split in the friendship. Psychologists provide the concept and practical delivery of confidential service encounters with their patients in their code of ethics. This permits patients to provide sensitive details of their lives without fear of disclosing or revealing their confidences in session. Exceptions, of course, exist to protect the patient from self-harm or the public if a threat is made or to vulnerable populations such as children or the elderly who may be at risk of abuse within the community.
Insights into Human Behavior
Psychologists possess a deep understanding of human behavior and analytical skills to look holistically at the variables that comprise a complex problem. They possess the expertise to resolve interpersonal difficulties that hinder the growth of a patient’s personal life. They also have the understanding and awareness to resolve issues that extend to intimate relationships, familial and friendship relationships, and workplace settings. This professional and unbiased experience instills confidence in the patient on the effectiveness of psychological help.
